Initial fanzines were reproduced by means of a Hectograph, or a spirit duplicator. After that, carbon copies were used for a short while but not for long. The impermanencefragility of carbon copies adds on to the appeal. Due to the improvement of printing techniques, fanzines became an easy way to reproduce faithful versions of artists' works and a natural way of creating artists books. They were first used as pamphlets because it was a simple way of passing on literary texts and political messages without having to do it through the established channels. Some publications have now evolved into highly collectible objects of art and, in many ways, commodities.

Rui Tenreiro of Soyfriends and Bell-Roberts jointly curate the exhibition, titled Carbon Copy Commodity. Soyfriends is an independent publisher based in Norway, dedicated to printing and distributing works of selected scandinavian and international artists. Carbon Copy Commodity is a mix of the object as a fragile and impermanent piece of art, and its value as commodity.

This exhibition runs concurrently with the inaugural PRINT 07, Bell-Roberts' annual print exhibition in association with UCT's Michaelis School of Fine Art, Stellenbosch University Visual Arts Department of Rhodes Universitiy Fine Art Department. PRINT 07 will take the form of an extensive educational print exhibition that celebrates the medium. Carbon Copy Commodity compliments this exhibition by exploring other possibilities of the print medium.

South African artists on seeing, thinking, making, living...
Sean O'Toole
Writing in the December 2008 issue of Art South Africa, art historian Marilyn Martin lamented "the dearth of texts by artists" in recent times. The March 2010 edition of Art South Africa, which will be launched in Cape Town at Design Indaba Expo(February 26-28, stand B11), directly addresses this absence.
Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas

The most complete and up-to-date monograph on the celebrated painter's work.
Editor: Dominic van den Boogerd
Marlene Dumas is celebrated around the world for her highly charged depictions of the human form. In her oil paintings, drawings and watercolours she captures the body in all its states, from pain to pleasure, eroticism to pathos, birth to death. These works often focus on the body as a contested site with regard to issues such as race, pornography and illegal immigration, but they also address such timeless themes as mortality, sexuality and childhood. Above all, they express a boundless faith in the power of painting to communicate complex psychological realities with eloquence and humour.
